Open Savings (the piggy bank). Everything on it comes from your own paychecks, bills, balances and funds, and updates as they change.
What’s on it
- Saved so far: what’s in your savings accounts, how many months of essentials your rainy-day money would cover, how much you plan to save each month and what share of your income that is. If there’s room, it also shows what’s safe to save on your next payday.
- Your next steps: the two or three most useful things to do now, each with a button. For example Build a $1,000 starter fund, Set aside $45/mo for Car insurance, or, when money is tight, Get checking steady first.
- Emergency fund: your rainy-day money on a ladder: a $1,000 starter fund, then 1, 3 and 6 months of essentials (your bills, debt payments and everyday spending). It shows the next step and, if you’re saving toward it, when you’ll get there.
- Savings rules: money you’ve set to move to savings on a schedule. See Savings rules.
- Goals & funds: each fund and its progress. A fund with a target and a date shows what it needs each month and whether you’re on track or behind.
- Bills that don’t come every month: yearly and every-3-months bills, with what to set aside each month. Tap the amount to start a set-aside.
- Rules of thumb: classic savings advice, checked against your numbers. Spend less than you earn, pay yourself first, keep $1,000 for surprises, clear expensive debt next, build up 3 months of essentials, save 10–20% of what comes in, save ahead for yearly bills, and save at least half of any windfall.
The order it suggests
- Keep checking above your cushion until payday.
- Build a $1,000 starter fund.
- Pay down debt charging 15% interest or more. The payoff planner helps.
- Grow your rainy-day fund to 3 months of essentials, while saving for goals and yearly bills.
- Work up to saving 10–20% of your income, and 6 months of essentials.
